Profile suspended: decode the reason, then fix it

Google's suspension emails are vague on purpose. Match your situation below, do the fixes, then send one appeal with evidence.

First: don't make a new profile, and don't send several appeals. Both make reinstatement slower.

Which one is yours?

Deceptive content · fixable: usually

Google's wording for most quality-guideline breaks: a business name with extra keywords or a city, an address that isn't a real staffed location, a category that doesn't match, or a website that redirects elsewhere.

  1. Change the business name to your real-world name exactly as on your signage and legal documents. No "Best Plumber Teaneck" extras.
  2. Make sure the address is a physical location where you serve customers or have signage. Home-based service businesses should hide the address and set a service area instead.
  3. Pick the one primary category that describes your main business.
  4. Point the website field at a page that is actually about this business and location.
  5. Then request reinstatement once, with evidence.
Quality issues · fixable: usually

A general flag: duplicates, mismatched details across the web, or the profile looking like it's in a category Google treats as high-risk (locksmiths, garage doors, towing, lawyers, rehab, movers).

  1. Search Maps for your business and phone number; report or remove any duplicate profiles you control.
  2. Make name, address and phone match your website and your top directory listings exactly.
  3. For high-risk categories, be ready to upload a licence and proof of location; Google asks for them.
  4. Request reinstatement once, with the documents attached.
Address or location issue · fixable: sometimes

The address can't be verified, is a virtual office, PO box, or coworking space without signage, or doesn't match what Street View shows.

  1. Virtual offices and PO boxes aren't allowed. If that's your situation, switch to a service-area business with the address hidden.
  2. If you really are at the address, add exterior and interior photos with signage, and a utility bill or lease in the business name.
  3. Request reinstatement with that evidence.
Duplicate · fixable: usually

Another profile exists for the same business at the same location, often created by a previous owner, an agency, or Google itself from web data.

  1. Find the other profile on Maps. If it's unclaimed, request ownership; if you own it, merge by marking one as a duplicate (Suggest an edit → Remove this place → Duplicate of another place).
  2. Keep the profile with reviews and history, remove the other.
  3. If the other owner won't respond, ask Google to transfer ownership through the support form.
Hard suspension (profile removed from Maps) · fixable: sometimes

The listing itself is gone, not just your access. Usually a repeat or severe guideline break.

  1. Fix every issue above before appealing; a hard suspension is rarely lifted on the first try if anything is still off.
  2. Gather strong evidence: licence, bill, lease, signage photos, website matching all details.
  3. One well-documented appeal. Multiple appeals get queued behind each other and slow everything down.
Repeated suspensions · fixable: sometimes

Reinstated once, suspended again. Google now scrutinises every edit.

  1. Stop editing. Each change can trigger a new review.
  2. Compare today's profile with the reinstated version; revert anything you changed since.
  3. If you must change something, do one change, wait a week, then the next.

Questions

Should I create a new profile instead?

No. A new profile for a suspended business is itself a guideline violation and usually gets suspended faster. Fix and appeal the original.

Why was I suspended with no warning?

Suspensions are mostly automatic: an edit, a category, a name change or a pattern across profiles trips a rule. The email rarely says which. The decoder below narrows it down.

How many times can I appeal?

There's no hard limit, but each appeal while one is open restarts the wait. One complete appeal beats three partial ones.
